Google Meet uses AI to cancel noise on video calls
Google Meet tool promises to reduce annoying noises during voice and video call meetings
Google uses artificial intelligence to cancel noise on video calls and voice performed by Google Meet. The feature to prevent annoying noises in videoconferences began to be released to users of the service on Monday (8). The tool will be gradually available to G Suite subscribers.
The noise-canceling tool is a novelty expected since April in Google’s video conferencing service. Like the Microsoft Teams solution, unveiled last month, the Google Meet feature promises to reduce invasive sounds that disrupt video calls.
Google’s noise cancellation system uses artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to improve audio quality. But, remember, not all uncomfortable noise is blocked. “It works well on a slamming door. Works well on barking dogs; children fighting, more or less ”explains G Suite’s product management director, Serge Lachapelle, to VentureBeat .
The guarantee of privacy is another promise of the tool. “We do not analyze anything that is happening at the meetings, unless you decide to record a meeting”, explains the executive. “The way we are going to work is through our customers’ channels and support and so on, trying to identify cases where things did not work as planned. Internally, at Google, there are recorded meetings, and if someone identifies a problem that has occurred, we hope to send it to the team. But we do not analyze recordings for this purpose, unless someone sends us the file manually ”.
The new function will be active by default for all G Suite Enterprise and G Suite Enterprise for Education subscribers, initially on the web version of Google Meet ( meet.google.com ). To disable noise cancellation, you need to access the audio and video settings of the conversation and deselect the option “Noise cancellation”.
The tool will be made available on Android and iOS applications in the future.
Other news from Google were also introduced in April along with the noise cancellation tool. These include grid view, Google Chrome tab presentations and features to improve image illumination in dark environments.
