How to open Microsoft Word documents without Word
Check out how to open Microsoft Word documents without installing Word on your computer or smartphone. There are several ways to open doc and Docx files without using the Microsoft Office suite program!
The Microsoft Word program is a program that is part of the Microsoft Office package and to get it you need to pay a closed version called Office Home & Student, where a single payment is made, or make an annual subscription to Microsoft 365 Personal (formerly Office 365 Personal). However, be aware that it is possible to open Microsoft Word document files in DOCX and DOC formats without having to have the software installed on your computer.
There are several ways to access Word documents on a Windows PC without the need to install Microsoft Word. Check it out below:
Download Word Mobile on Windows 10
Yes, it is possible to download the Word Mobile app from the Microsoft Store (Windows 10 application store) even though it was initially developed for Windows 10 Mobile. However, this version made for smartphones and tablets only allows the display of files (it is not possible to edit). The program is free and can be run on both notebooks and Windows 10 desktops (click here to download).

Open Microsoft Word Online on the OneDrive website
You can view and edit a Microsoft Word document using OneDrive, a file storage service in the cloud, such as Google Drive. For that, you will need any browser (Firefox, Chrome, Edge etc.) and create a Microsoft account. After logging into your account, simply access the OneDrive website and drag the file to the service page, as you can see in the image below.

Install LibreOffice
There is a free program called LibreOffice that supports viewing and editing Microsoft Word files. Although not identical (obviously), it is an excellent alternative for those who cannot or do not want to invest in the Microsoft Office package. To download the software, access this link.
Use Google Docs
An alternative, to open a Docx or doc file (Word extension), is to use Google’s cloud storage platform, Drive. To access Drive, you’ll need to create a Google account.
After logging into your account, access the Drive and upload the Microsoft Word document (drag the file to the page opened in the browser, as well as on the OneDrive website). With the file in Drive, just select it to open it through Google Docs, a free office program for Google browsers.

It is also possible to access Microsoft Word documents through smartphones and tablets with Android or iOS operating system . See below how to do it.
