iOS 14 will notify the use of camera and microphone in apps with colored lights

Measure reinforces the company’s commitment to user safety and privacy

Apple recently introduced its updated operating system iOS 14 which is also bringing a new privacy feature for users. Now, everyone who has an iPhone running iOS 14 will know when an app is using their device’s microphone or camera through orange and green signals.

The feature will detect the use of the camera and/or microphone and alert the user using the colored light notification system in the upper right corner of the device. The feature promises to increase privacy transparency in iOS 14, an issue related to user security that has always been prioritized by the company.

The orange indicator represents when the microphone is being used. The green dot tells you when the front or rear camera is being used. This will make it easier to know if apps like Instagram or Facebook are spying on your conversations or accessing your camera without you knowing it. Often, applications ask for access to the user’s camera and microphone and remain active even when the extension is closed.

Applications like Facebook use the information obtained by the microphone and the camera of the cell phone to optimize their advertisements and publications. In this way, the platform has the ability to know what the user’s interests are and fill it with advertisements related to their searches or conversations captured by the microphone.

The OnePlus 7T smartphone , for example, already has this feature . It shows a camera icon in the notification bar when it is being used. This is somewhat similar to what Apple is implementing on iOS 14, but this time using colored light signals. In addition to the orange and green indicators, Apple is adding several privacy features in iOS 14 that allow for greater transparency and information about the use of apps and widgets.
