MediaTek continues to renew its portfolio of 5G processors. After announcing the MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ a few weeks ago, the Chinese company has just launched the MediaTek Dimensity 820, a new SoC that, following in the wake of the Density range, incorporates a 5G modem with dual SIM 5G support. It has eight 2.6 GHz cores and an APU dedicated to artificial intelligence tasks.
At the moment, it is not known which will be the first device to incorporate it, but it recently appeared in TENAA, the Chinese certification body, a Redmi that incorporated it. Be that as it may, we will have to wait to see it working. That said, let’s see what MediaTek is betting with this new platform.

Eight cores and 5G NSA / SA

The MediaTek Dimensity 820 is a processor designed for the high-end. It is made in seven nanometers, the smallest in the absence of TSMC starting to produce in five nanometers, and inside there are eight cores divided into two clusters of four cores each. The former consists of four 2.6 GHz ARM Cortex-A76s, while the latter incorporates four 2 GHz ARM Cortex -A55s. The GPU is the Mali-G57 MC5.
The processor supports up to 16GB of LPDDR4x memory, UFS storage, and displays of up to 2,520 x 1,080 pixels with up to 120Hz refresh rate. In turn, the SoC has the APU (AI Processing Unit or Artificial Intelligence Processing Unit) 3.0, which according to MediaTek, offers 300% more performance than its direct competitors. It is intended to optimize camera performance and offer AI-based object and scene recognition.
As for photography, the processor ISP supports up to four simultaneous cameras and sensors up to 80 megapixels. In addition, it supports 32 + 16 megapixel sensors at 30 FPS to make depth measurements. It also allows recording in 4K HDR.
But the main bet of the MediaTek Dimensity 820 is in 5G, and that is that the processing has an integrated 5G modem with support for 5G NSA and SA in sub-6GHz and dual SIM 5G + 5G with dual standby and VoNR. In the same way, the modem is compatible with 2CC Carrier Aggregatioon, a technology that allows you to increase speed and have better coverage. This modem also has battery saving technologies such as UltraSave Network Detection and UltraSave Content Detection.
