Microsoft removes malicious extensions targeting the Edge browser.
These malicious extensions were posing as the popular dark mode extension called Dark Reader.
You should check if you are using the original and official Dark Reader extension, and not a malicious copy.
Microsoft has removed a series of malicious extensions targeting its new Edge browser that contained malware, and you should check whether you have been one of the affected users.
Nowadays it is quite common for us to install different extensions in each of our browsers to expand the functionalities when browsing the Internet, and the most popular are those related to forcing dark mode on web pages.
One of the most used extensions both in Firefox, Chrome, and also in the new Edge is Dark Reader, which basically what it does is force the dark on web pages. Well, different attackers have been creating malicious applications with names similar to those of Dark Reader, and even with the same icon, to confuse users to install them, containing malware inside.

The developers of Dark Reader themselves have discovered some malicious extensions that were in the Edge store and after reporting it to Microsoft, those of Redmond have acted quite quickly and have removed them from the store.
In any case, it is likely that hundreds of users downloaded the malicious extensions believing that it was the correct one, and they may be infected. Within the malicious extensions was hidden a code encoded in a .png file, and that within five days it downloaded another malicious code that collected user data without their consent .
All these malicious extensions posing as Dark Reader have already been removed but you should check if you are using this extension by checking if you have the reliable one . For this you can be guided by the opinions of the users and the ratings that the extension has received in the last days.
As with applications and games that you can install, you should also be careful with all the extensions that you add to your browser, making sure that you are installing one that is up-to-date, with good opinions and a remarkable track record.
