Tesla announces a new electric car with a certified range greater than 600 kilometers
Tesla’s 2020 line of electric vehicles is about to gain another member: the Tesla Model S Long Range Plus. The new car from Elon Musk’s company has received certification from the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency of the United States) that it will have a range of 402 miles (which is equivalent to approximately 646 kilometers).
Compared to the previous model, the 2019 Tesla Model S 100D – which has the same battery design – this represents a 20% increase in the range of the car’s electric motor.
There are several changes in the hardware architecture and in the central system – both transformational and reformulations -, which were made by Tesla’s engineering, production and design team, which are responsible for this achievement.
Starting with reducing the mass of the line. Based on studies of past projects, such as Model 3 and Model Y, the company’s engineering team can apply new mass reduction concepts to the Model X and Model S lines. This includes standardizing the manufacture of internal seats for cars and the use of lighter weight materials in the manufacture of batteries and drive units.

The new 8.5-inch wheels and Aero Tempest tires also play a key role in achieving this certification. They reduce aerodynamic drag compared to those used in the Model S Long Range.
Tesla has also replaced the mechanical oil pump with an electric oil pump that optimizes lubrication in the rear induction drive unit. This modification is able to reduce their friction regardless of the speed reached by the engine.
These, among other changes, although relatively small, guarantee an exclusive ability to introduce them into the manufacturing lines and allow significant gains in efficiency, reach and overall value when combined.
Currently, Tesla has not brought its electric car models to Brazil, however other automakers, such as Fiat and Audi have already announced the arrival of electric or hybrid cars in the country. Volvo also has some hybrid models sold in the country and the company has also promised to reimburse customers for the expense of electric recharges, to encourage the use of the electric motor instead of the combustion engine.
