We’ve collected all the rumors about a new little iPhone, which could be called iPhone SE 2020 or very potentially iPhone 9.
There is, without a doubt, strong demand for a new iPhone SE. The original iPhone SE had indeed been discontinued in September 2018, leaving fans of this model in search of a new 4-inch smartphone.
Those who hoped to see the iPhone SE replaced by an equally affordable model were disappointed by the high price of the iPhone XR.
Without replacing the iPhone SE, the only low-cost iPhone on the market is the iPhone 7, which is already two years old. The outlook was bleak, but since then there has been some optimism about the launch of a new iPhone SE.
In January 2019, Apple began selling off a large stock of the iPhone SE (€279), which, much to its surprise, sold out very quickly. You can still find it on Cdiscount, Back Market, MacWay (from €124), Amazon (from €126.15), Fnac (from €97) or Darty for example.
This suggests that there is a strong expectation for an iPhone of this size (4 inches) and that Apple fans are desperately looking for a cheap iOS. After realizing this infatuation, the firm has, it would seem, embarked on the manufacture and marketing of a new iPhone SE.
An April 2019 report mentions a new iPhone with a small screen to be launched in 2020. Would it be the iPhone SE 2nd generation?
In 2018, the firm in La Pomme released a new iPad mini, iPad Air, and in May 2019, to everyone’s surprise, a new version of the iPod Touch, it could do the same with the SE.

A new iPhone for less than €500
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s predictions in early 2018 sounded accurate; he suggested that in addition to updates to the iPhone X and a larger version with an OLED display (now known as the iPhone XS and XS Max), Apple would launch a cheaper iPhone in September 2018.
Except that the new phone would be a 6.1-inch model with an LCD screen, which would be much more expensive than the current iPhone SE, and that’s basically what happened.
The iPhone XR arrived, but the iPhone SE was discontinued in September 2018, leaving the older and cheaper iPhone to fall in line with the lower-end models on the market.
We were expecting the Keynote of September 10, 2019, to launch a replacement for the iPhone SE, but it’s rather the 2018 XR that found one since the iPhone 11 is sold from €809.
However, all hope is not lost, the analyst Ming-Chi Kuo persists and signs, an SE 2 is well planned for March 2020 and that it will have the following technical characteristics :
- 4.7-inch screen
- A13 chip
- 3 GB RAM
- 32 GB, 64 GB or 128 GB ROMs
- Sidereal Grey, Red, and Silver
- Will look like iPhone 8
- Touch ID but no Face ID
- Assembly in February
iPhone SE 2 release date
- An announcement / a discreet addition to the Apple Store on April 3 or 15?
- on sale from April 22?
No one agrees on the release date of the iPhone SE 2, some people think there won’t be a new generation since a 4-inch screen is far too small. However, according to some reports, this mini iPhone should have been released in March 2020, which coincides with Apple’s annual spring event.
However, other reports indicate that a low-priced iPhone would be planned for the spring of 2020. In fact, financial analyst Ming-Chi Kuo published a note in October 2019 in which he assures that Apple will launch the iPhone SE 2 in the first quarter of 2020. He estimates that the firm could sell 30 to 40 million units in 2020.
He is not the only one to think that since a report of DigiTimes published in April 2019, stipulated that an iPhone of 5,42 inches would be launched in 2020, just like Blayne Curtis, an analyst at Barclays. According to the latter, it would have the same components as the iPhone 8.
It is possible that the firm à la Pomme will launch 2 small iPhone in 2020, or 2 variants of the same device. At least, that’s what Digitmes says, based on information from sources in Apple’s supply chain; Chipbond Technology, a supplier of display chips, has received product orders for 2 different LCD displays. This information is not very convincing but it would mean that the iPhone 9 and 9 Max would be in the pipes.
Finally, due to the Coronavirus outbreak, the 2020 WWDC will be broadcast entirely online, which is always better than a postponement or cancellation. For more information, visit this Apple page.
According to Jon Prosser’s tweet (below), relayed by the Newsbytes site, the iPhone would be announced on April 15 and its orders available as of April 22, 2020.
The 9to5Mac site assures that tech reseller Best Buy has received Urban Armor shells to protect a 4.7-inch iPhone, and that it should not put it online before April 5th.
In any case, what we are sure is that its release is imminent! As proof, the iPhone 9 has been spotted in the beta version of iOS 13.4.5 unveiled on March 31.
According to the 9to5Mac website, the iPhone SE could be available to order as early as April 3, 2020.
What will the next iPhone SE be called?
The future iPhone is likely to be called iPhone SE2 or iPhone 9. A report by Macotakara, published on December 7, 2019, quotes an “informed” source that supports the theory that Apple plans to use an outdated number since the firm went from 8 to X then 11.
According to the 9to5 site, Apple is about to announce the iPhone SE, so its SE name would be confirmed, which invalidates all rumors about an iPhone 9.
What will be the price of the iPhone SE 2?
According to Ming-Chi Kuo, the SE2 will be sold for $399, or €362. Until September 2018, the iPhone SE cost this price for its 32GB storage capacity and $449 for its 128GB version. Prices comparable to those of the iPhone 8.
Note that the SE2 may not be available everywhere, according to some reports published in 2018. The Economic Daily claimed in 2018 that Apple was working on an entry-level iPhone codenamed Hangzhou. This model was to be launched in China and India in order to conquer these markets.
Design of the iPhone SE 2
In November 2019, Ming-Chi Kuo announced that the iPhone SE 2 could be available in Sidereal Grey, Red and Silver. Note that its previous edition is in Silver, Gold, Sidereal Grey and Pink. Alternatively, we could see an iPhone SE in colors similar to the iPhone 5C, iPhone XR or 11.
According to the 9to5Mac website, the SE would be available in White, Black and Product RED.
In an October 2019 memo, Ming-Chi Kuo stated that the design and components of the SE 2 will be identical to the iPhone 8 and will, therefore, be closer to the iPhone 8 than the X. It could be equipped with a welcome button and not the FaceID, which should not displease …
Nevertheless, this implies that this 2nd SE generation will not be as small as many hope. If Ming-Chi Kuo is right then the OS will have the same dimensions as the 8. The Macotakara report, quoted above, also indicates that the iPhone SE2/9 will have the same design as the 8 but that it will benefit from the A13 chip.
However, a Chinese report from February 2018 indicates that the new SE will adopt a similar design to the first edition, but with a larger screen (4.2 inches, smaller than the 8 (4.7 inches)).
The 2016 iPhone SE has a 4-inch (diagonal) screen, measures 123.8 x 58.6 mm, is 7.6 mm thick and weighs 113 g. The iPhone 8, on the other hand, measures 138.4 x 67.3 mm, is 7.3 mm thick and weighs 148 g.
According to a Taiwanese supply chain, three new iPhones with 5.42″, 6.06″ and 6.67″ OLED displays are planned.
This new edition may also be equipped with an antenna made of liquid crystal polymer (PCL) for better reception.
The iPhone SE 2 in photos and videos
Despite our uncertainty as to whether Apple will update the OS, we have seen a number of leaks related to the iPhone SE 2.
A video posted on TikTok shows what would be a prototype of the iPhone 9. Given that it’s very close to release, it’s very likely that someone in the supply chain may have been able to get one, but don’t take this video at face value. Moreover, sites such as 9to5Mac state that the “Proprietary and Confidential” message does not appear when it should.
Whether it’s the next iPhone 9 or not, we can note that it has rounded edges identical to those of the iPhone 8 and a single photosensor just like the iPhone 4.
Another video, made by ConceptsiPhone represents the new OS, it shows the return of the Home button, a Touch ID fingerprint reader, a rear photo lens with an LED flash, a black, white and red Product Red.
Voici une image conceptuelle publiée sur iGeekBlog et créée par OnLeaks, où l’iPhone SE2 ressemble énormément au 8 mais avec un dos en verre, probablement pour une compatibilité avec la recharge sans fil.
There is also a recent concept video from (for) ConceptsiPhone. It shows an iPhone SE 2 with a notched screen, 2 rear photo sensors and…a jack plug, but it seems very unlikely…
Conceptual illustrations and videos
Now, let’s analyze the conceptual images and videos created to get an idea of the design of ES 2.
Gunho Lee’s video for ConceptsiPhone (below) shows us an iPhone SE 2 imagined with a 4-inch, full screen, with a notch and without a Home button. This concept also features a glass back for wireless charging.
Olixar created a 3D image rendering of the iPhone SE for a screen protector that it plans to sell; the image was provided to us by Mobile Fun. The company says this is based on information from the supply chain.
Here’s what Concept Creator says the iPhone SE 2 would look like if Apple gave it an iPhone X design and bright colors:

Technical characteristics of the SE 2
As for the components of this iPhone SE, here’s what the web says:
Processor and storage
Ming-Chi Kuo judges that the SE 2 will be equipped with the A13 chip, like the iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max and that it will be boosted by a RAM of 3 GB (against 2 for the SE of 2016 ).
The current SE has the A9 chip, as does the iPhone 6S. With iOS 13 which only works from the iPhone 6s, it would be surprising if Apple used a processor earlier than the A11 Bionic of the iPhone 8.
According to a Tekz24 report from August 2017, the new iPhone SE 2 should work with the A10 Fusion chip, like the iPhone 7.
A Chinese report also supports this hypothesis and indicates that the A10 Fusion chip will be combined with a 2 GB RAM and storage space of 32 GB or 128 GB.
Information again from the 9to5Mac site indicates that the SE will have 3 different storage versions: 64 GB, 128 GB, 256 GB and that 5 shells will be available (black silicone, white silicone, red leather, black leather and night blue leather ).
Screen
It has been suggested that the iPhone SE would have a 4.7-inch screen instead of the current 4 inches and the Home button should be kept.
Camera
We could see a 5 Mp or 7 Mp Face Time sensor with Flash Retina, instead of the 1.2 Mp of the current SE. However, it would keep a 12 MP camera with an aperture of f / 2.2.
Battery
The battery will be slightly more powerful, going from 1640 mAh to 1700 mAh, which might be necessary to power a larger display.
Potential iPhone SE features
The iPhone SE won’t be a flagship, so don’t expect it to have all of the latest features. Rather, it is a question of which ones it will take over from the iPhone X and 8 Plus.
Face ID
If the iPhone SE is equipped with Face ID, then that would mean that it will have no Home button.
Wireless charging
The new iPhone SE 2 will offer wireless charging thanks to a glass back.
