Huawei and Xiaomi may be preparing new foldable smartphones
In 2018, we had the first foldable smartphone, Royole Flexpai. In 2019, Samsung and Huawei foldable hit the market. Now, Huawei and Xiaomi may be preparing new foldable smartphones, the second generation of foldable smartphones promises to bring tougher screens.
The first smartphone with a foldable screen appeared in 2018, then in 2019, more companies joined fashion in an attempt to create a trend.
However, problems involving the construction of these devices and their extremely high cost made the commercialization of existing models for a more than select market.
Let’s say that, even with intermediate settings, their prices reached a very high level. Giving users exclusive status.
We currently have some folding smartphones available on the market, but they follow the same pattern, regardless of their format, smartphone that becomes tablet, or smartphone that folds in half, becoming very small, one thing has not changed yet, the high price.
The growing need to bring foldable devices to the market means that the demand for ultra-thin flexible glass is increasing. According to recent reports, Huawei and Xiaomi have bought lots and lots of ultra-thin flexible glass for products with large curved screens. These products include smartphones or foldable smartphones with “hugging smartphone” screens.
It can be said that the ultrafine flexible glass (UTG) is the optimized version of the polyimide film (CPI). The first generation of foldable smartphones like the Samsung GALAXY Fold and Huawei Mate X used this type of CPI film. However, UTG is more durable, relatively more resistant, thinner, and more malleable.

Currently, Huawei has two generations of foldable smartphones. The latest, Huawei Mate Xs already uses ultra-thin flexible glass in its construction. Compared to Mate X, it is better in every way.
It is worth remembering that although Huawei did not go through the problems that Samsung faced, it also delayed the launch of Mate X a few times.
Xiaomi, on the other hand, does not yet have a foldable smartphone. In fact, the Xiaomi Mi MIX Alpha, which is not a foldable smartphone and is not currently on sale, uses a flexible AMOLED surround screen from Visionox.
This smartphone also uses exclusive glass bonding technology to make the entire “surround” screen not look like a plastic screen.
There is currently no news on the next generation of Mate X or Mi MIX Alpha. However, based on information that both companies have purchased a large amount of ultra-thin flexible glass, it is possible that both companies are working on folding device designs.
I keep thinking that technology has yet to mature and have a more affordable cost to get out of the “fashion” level and become a real trend. Meanwhile, I keep giving preference to secondary screens that are accessories and that can be removed at any time from smartphones.
